South Central LA is a collection of Liquor Stores, Fast Food and Vacant Lots. There is very limited access to fresh healthy food in these neighborhoods. Ron Finley wants to change that by teaching people to grow their own food right in their back and front yards and along the sidewalks and wherever there is vacant space with ground to plant. Obesity is 5 X higher here than in Beverly Hill 10 miles away. Ten miles are light years away in terms of opportunity and Healthy lifestyle. The City owns 26 Square miles of vacant lots which could be used to provide food and jobs in the inner city and it is about time to do something so obvious and yet so creative. “LA Green Ground” an organization that Ron promotes is planting gardens wherever they can in the inner city and are finally getting a little political support thanks to their efforts and petitions. All gardeners are volunteers and the food produced is free.
Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA — in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. Why? For fun, for defiance, for beauty and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where “the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys.“
